Historical Background

The Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2/Trop was a tropicalized version of Germany's famous Bf 109 fighter, modified with a dust filter and equipment for service in the harsh conditions of North Africa. One of its most celebrated pilots was Hans-Joachim Marseille, whose remarkable flying skill earned him 158 aerial victories, the majority achieved while serving with Jagdgeschwader 27 in the North African campaign. Nicknamed the "Star of Africa," Marseille became one of the Luftwaffe's most respected fighter aces and remains one of the most famous aviators of World War II.
