Historical Background
Introduced in 1942, the M10 Gun Motor Carriage (GMC) was the U.S. Army's first purpose-built tank destroyer to enter large-scale production. Built on a modified M4 Sherman chassis and armed with a powerful 3-inch M7 gun, the M10 was designed to engage and destroy enemy armored vehicles at long range. Its open-topped turret provided excellent visibility for the crew but offered limited protection from artillery and small arms fire. The M10 served extensively with American, British, Free French, and other Allied forces, earning a reputation for reliability and effectiveness during the campaigns across Europe.
