Historical Background

The Tiger I Ausf. E Mid Production entered service during the second half of 1943, incorporating improvements based on battlefield experience. Mid-production Tigers featured the newer commander's cupola, increased turret protection, and many vehicles received Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine coating beginning in late 1943. While some retained the earlier Feifel air filtration system and smoke grenade launchers, production changes gradually simplified the design as Germany sought to increase manufacturing efficiency. The Tiger I served in many of the war's major campaigns, including the Eastern Front, Italy, and Normandy, earning a reputation for its formidable armor and powerful 8.8cm gun.
