Historical Background

Introduced into U.S. Navy service in 1984, the Sikorsky SH-60B Seahawk was developed as the maritime successor to the UH-60 Black Hawk under the LAMPS Mk III program. Operating from destroyers, cruisers, and frigates, the Seahawk carried advanced radar, sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detection equipment, and lightweight torpedoes to hunt enemy submarines and surface vessels. Its folding rotor blades and hinged tail allowed efficient storage aboard warships, while its versatility also made it valuable for search and rescue, logistics, and surveillance missions. The SH-60B served the U.S. Navy for more than three decades before being replaced by the MH-60R Seahawk.
