Historical Background

The Messerschmitt Bf 109E entered service in 1939 and quickly became the backbone of the Luftwaffe fighter force. Powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine and armed with two 7.92mm machine guns and two 20mm MG FF cannons, the Bf 109E proved highly effective during the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain. The later E-7 variant introduced the capability to carry an external fuel tank for increased range, while the Trop version added a tropical air filter for operations in North Africa. Flown by many of Germany's leading fighter aces, the Bf 109E became one of the defining aircraft of the early Second World War.
