Historical Background

Zimmerit was a paste-like coating applied to German armored vehicles from 1943 to late 1944 to prevent magnetic anti-tank mines from adhering to armor surfaces. Factory workers applied the coating by hand using specialized tools to create distinctive ridged patterns before it hardened. Many King Tiger tanks equipped with the production (Henschel) turret received Zimmerit during the early months of production. Although the practice was discontinued in late 1944, Zimmerit remains one of the defining features of early-production Tiger II tanks and is an important detail for historically accurate scale models.
