Historical Background
The LTV A-7 Corsair II entered service with the U.S. Navy in the late 1960s as a carrier-based light attack aircraft designed to replace the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Derived from the Vought F-8 Crusader, the Corsair II featured advanced navigation and attack systems, a head-up display, and the ability to carry a substantial payload of conventional bombs, precision-guided munitions, anti-ship missiles, and anti-radiation missiles. The A-7E, the final U.S. Navy production variant, offered enhanced avionics and expanded weapons capability, serving with distinction during the Vietnam War and later Cold War operations before being replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet.
