Historical Background

Entering service in 1983, the F/A-18A Hornet was developed as a multirole fighter capable of both air superiority and precision ground attack missions. Designed to replace several older aircraft types, the Hornet quickly proved itself through its reliability, maneuverability, and advanced digital flight controls. It saw extensive combat during Operation Desert Storm, where it successfully conducted fighter escort, air interdiction, close air support, and strike missions. The Hornet has also served with numerous allied air forces around the world and remains one of the most successful carrier-based combat aircraft ever produced.
