Historical Background

Commissioned in 1975, the Kiev was the lead ship of the Soviet Union's Kiev-class heavy aircraft cruisers. Unlike Western aircraft carriers, the Kiev combined a large missile armament with a flight deck capable of operating Yak-38 V/STOL fighter aircraft and Kamov anti-submarine helicopters. Designed to protect Soviet naval task forces and strategic submarines, the Kiev served throughout the Cold War before being retired in 1993. Today, the ship has been preserved as part of a museum and hotel complex in China, making it one of the few surviving Cold War aircraft carriers.
