Historical Background

Introduced in 1944, the Vought F4U-1D Corsair was an improved version of the famous Corsair fighter designed to perform both air superiority and ground attack missions. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the F4U-1D could exceed 440 mph and carried six .50 caliber Browning machine guns along with bombs and rockets for close air support. Flying from U.S. Navy carriers and island airfields throughout the Pacific, the Corsair earned an outstanding combat record against Japanese aircraft while also providing vital support during amphibious assaults. Its exceptional performance and rugged construction made it one of the most successful naval fighters of World War II.
